The unsterile laparotomy sponge, which has not been pre-washed, is made of 4-ply dressing gauze complying with standard EN 14079 type 20. It consists of four layers of gauze, with woven-in X-Ray thread, which have been sewn up. The lap sponge is not equipped with a loop. In operative areas the laparotomy sponge is used to absorb blood and secretion or to protect soft tissue or organ tissue. Disposable laparotomy sponges must be sterilized before use. 20 lap sponges are packed in a pouch.
